If your pregnancy test came back positive and you are trying to decide what to do next, we recommend a limited obstetrical ultrasound. You need the information only an ultrasound can give to choose your next step. At Alpha PRC, we offer free limited obstetrical ultrasounds.

WHAT IS AN ULTRASOUND?

It sounds strange to create a picture with sound waves, but that is exactly what an ultrasound does. Ultrasound is an imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture images from the inside of your body. A member of our medical staff applies a lubricating gel to your stomach. Then, a hand-held device called a transducer is rubbed over the gel on your skin. The transducer sends sound waves into your body, collects the echoes that bounce back, and creates an image on a computer screen.

WHY DO I NEED AN ULTRASOUND?

There are three important questions you need answered and only an ultrasound will do that for you.

IS THE PREGNANCY VIABLE?

A viable pregnancy means a heartbeat is detected. If a heartbeat is not heard, it may be either too early in your pregnancy or you may have miscarried. A significant number of known pregnancies end in natural miscarriage during the first trimester. An ultrasound can see and document the fetal heart rate to determine if you are farther than six weeks along.

HOW FAR ALONG AM I?

Ultrasound scanning reveals how far along you are in your pregnancy based on the measurements of the fetus. Knowing the date of conception also helps to verify the father. If you are considering abortion, the gestational age determines whether you can have a medical or surgical abortion.

WHERE IS THE PREGNANCY LOCATED?

Although rather uncommon, it is possible for your pregnancy to be located somewhere other than your uterus. Our free limited obstetrical ultrasound will reveal if your pregnancy is ectopic. An ectopic pregnancy means the embryo implants outside the uterus. This is extremely dangerous and requires immediate medical attention.
